In the US, 15–20% is the standard range for sit-down restaurants. 15% is considered standard service, 18% is good, and 20%+ is excellent. For takeout, 10–15% is appreciated but not always expected. Outside the US, tipping customs vary significantly.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?+
Technically, it is more correct to tip on the pre-tax amount since the tax is not part of the service. However, most people tip on the total bill for convenience and it only makes a small difference.
How do I split an uneven bill?+
If each person ordered differently, it's fairest to tally each person's items individually, then calculate their proportionate share of the tip. Our calculator handles even splits; for uneven splits, note each person's subtotal then add their proportionate tip.
